Oliver Stairs

Oliver B

Professional Piano & Voice Educator

Oliver is a multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, and composer. Born in Traverse City Michigan, he received a
BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in
Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch. Through the teaching artist program at UofM, Oliver had the
privilege of instructing some wonderful students during his undergrad years, and he cannot wait to
continue his teaching in New York!

After some formal piano training in his youth, Oliver’s passion for music truly blossomed in high school
where he developed a profound interest in songwriting. The pop and indie-rock soundtracks of his
teenage years inspired him to pick up his older brother’s guitar, and it’s that same guitar that he still
uses to make music today. Once he got to college, Oliver enrolled in music theory classes and his musical world expanded tenfold. He was enamored by the mathematical elements of music, and found himself spending hours in the practice rooms just experimenting with his newfound musical palette. Once he knew the theory, the mystery around music had vanished and he was able to establish his voice as a musician.

Oliver’s teaching philosophy revolves around clarity and demystification. Learning an instrument like
piano can seem a daunting task, but the process can be made much simpler once students understand
the patterns behind the sound. Whether it’s piano, guitar, or even the harmonica on occasion, Oliver
enjoys making sounds however he can, and he cannot wait to share this love of music with his students.
